Windows and Mirrors

Soon after I moved to Juneau in 2023 I felt called to begin a new painting series, but wasn't sure what it would look like. While I mused on what I wanted to do next, I started painting close-up oil paintings of human and animal eyes. I had done it occasionally in the past, and love the opportunity to penetrate deeper into another's personal gaze and find pure awareness.

I find that gazing into another's eyes is like gazing into a whole world, yet at the same time there is a self-recognition as our awareness directly meets another's awareness. In each eye, there is the recognition of unity, yet at the same time a different energy or transmission comes through. It seems ineffable and I'm not able to define it in words, but have come as close as I can with the titles of the paintings. 

After about a year this project naturally lead me to transition to painting "eyes of consciousness". All of my paintings are meditative and my intention is always to still the mind, but with my "third eyes", this intention has become fully overt. These eyes are no longer portraits, but instead aim to capture a deeper aspect of life or beingness.
