Susan in her studio, in the early stages of painting "Jeanne"

I was born and raised in Juneau, Alaska. I loved drawing people since I was a child, and as a teen transitioned to oil painting. I moved to New York City in 1995 to study art at the Cooper Union, receiving my BFA in 1999. I continued on to graduate school at Columbia University, receiving my MFA in 2001. In 2003, I moved with my future husband, Chris Grau, to Miami, and during those years had a studio at the Bakehouse Art Complex and was represented by ArtSpace: Virginia Miller Galleries. In 2007, I had a solo exhibition at Galerie La Courette in the South of France, and that year Chris and I also relocated to Upstate South Carolina. I exhibited regionally my first several years in the Carolinas, including a solo exhibition at ArtSpace in Raleigh, NC in 2011.

In 2023, Chris and I moved from South Carolina to Juneau, Alaska. In July 2025, I will have a solo exhibit at the JACC gallery, and in January 2026 I will have a solo exhiibiit at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum.
